Another winter is upon us here at Sheepscot Harbour Village Resort and Water’s Edge. A large part of Midcoast Maine’s allure is our peaceful winters. Families and couples venture up Maine’s coast in search of relaxing escapes from the daily grind. Our guests can stroll through a nearby state park under falling snow, visit a local history museum, and spend time bonding inside one of our charming rooms and suites here in Edgecomb, Maine.
Hiking and Snowshoeing
The serene wilderness that covers Maine’s coast is full of hiking and snowshoeing possibilities. The perfect place to begin a full day of exploration is at Fort Edgecomb State Historic Site, located only a half mile from Sheepscot Harbour Village Resort’s Maine cottage rentals. Head out for the day from your cottage and stroll along Eddy and Fort roads before exploring this 209-year-old fort, which once guarded the largest shipbuilding hub in New England. Nearby Reid State Park provides some of the best views of Sheepscot River and the Atlantic Ocean. This beautiful state park has both sandy and rocky beaches to go along with several serene snowshoeing trails. Several nearby preserves, such as Dodge Point, Zak, Ovens Mouth, and Porter, provide ample opportunities to explore our winter wonderland.
Sheepscot Harbour Village is one of the closest Maine family resorts to the Hidden Valley Nature Center, home to the area’s best little-known secret and cross-country trail system. Midcoast Conservancy, a local non-profit organization, preserves this 1,000-acre park and its 18 miles of meticulously-groomed cross-country ski trails. These trails feature frozen bogs and ponds as well as tall, snow-covered pines. Midcoast Conservancy hosts several winter events, such as their “Full Moon Hikes,” cross-country skiing clinics, and a yearly biathlon.
Midcoast Maine is full of fascinating history as the first European settlers arrived in 1604, nearly a century after the Spanish Empire first explored the land. We highly recommend warming up inside these three local museums this winter: the Owls Head Transportation Museum, Maine Maritime Museum, and Boothbay Region Historical Society. Owls Head has more than 150 old-world cars, planes, and bikes to inspect. The Maine Maritime Museum has over 20,000 artifacts, which tell the unique story of Midcoast Maine’s significant role in the once-flourishing maritime industry. The Boothbay Region Historical Society offers tours inside Elizabeth F. Reed’s home, built in 1874. Visitors can browse through six rooms of local artifacts and history. You can also stroll through the property’s grounds at Fullerton Park.
