Get to Know the Prettiest Village in Maine: Wiscasset

Sheepscot Harbour Village Resort and Water’s Edge overlooks the breathtaking Sheepscot River on peaceful Davis Island. Our small coastal Maine haven has charming cottages and rooms, stunning river vistas, and is located just across the Wiscasset bridge from the prettiest village in Maine. Supreme among Wiscasset hotels, Sheepscot Harbour Village is a half-mile drive or bridge walk from downtown Wiscasset, a town full of history, old-world charm, delicious seafood, and shopping.

The History of Wiscasset

Wiscasset was a Native American settlement until European immigrants discovered the land in 1663. This seaport village was once a center for lumber, fishing, and shipbuilding. Until the early 1800s, Wiscasset had the busiest seaport in Maine. Wiscasset was on the ballot for state capital but eventually lost out to the nearby city of Augusta. In the 1990s, the village became semi-famous for two abandoned schooners on the shores of the Sheepscot River: Hesper and Luther Little. These two ships slowly decayed and were eventually demolished by a severe storm; a must see “roadside attraction” until the mid-1990s.

The World’s Best Lobster Roll

Directly across the Sheepscot River, you’ll discover the home of the best lobster roll in the world at Red’s Eats. This Maine dining staple, which operates out of a tiny lobster shack, is a must for all of our guests. Each toasted roll is excessively stuffed with juicy lobster meat with a side of warm butter. Expect heavy traffic and long lines, but you cannot skip this award-winning lobster shack, made famous by Andrew Zimmern and other television personalities.

If patience isn’t one of your virtues, cross the street to Sarah’s Cafe for small-town charm, handmade pizza, delicious clam chowder, fresh seafood, and mouthwatering desserts. Sarah’s bakes their bread onsite, enhancing their sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, and pies.

For an elegant alternative to lobster shacks and cafes, seek out Little Village Bistro on the north side of Wiscasset. Every entree is stunningly plated, and each bite is memorable. Their garlic-dusted bistro steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus is a crowd favorite. Seafood lovers have to try their crispy seared salmon, scallops, and crab-stuffed haddock!

Old-World Attractions

Wiscasset has over 350 years of history since the original European settlement. Other Wiscasset hotels cannot match our unique riverfront properties and our access to local and nearby tours. Visit the Nickels-Sortwell House, built in 1807, for an educational history tour in a breathtaking federal-style mansion. Captain William Nickels constructed this timeless marvel when the town was one of the largest seaports in New England. Also built in 1807, the Castle Tucker is a Victorian-style mansion overlooking the Sheepscot River. The massive acreage around Castle Tucker is what sets it apart from many historical early-1800s mansions.

Eclectic Shopping

Judi’s Country Store has old-fashioned ice cream, delicious fudge, locally-made jewels, and art three miles south of downtown Wiscasset. Judi bakes all her goodies onsite, and she’s always available for a friendly chat with tourists. For a trip down memory lane, head across the highway to Wiscasset Village Antiques. Even if you don’t purchase anything, the antiques are worth revisiting and fun to poke around. Downtown Wiscasset has many eclectic shops to explore, especially the Rock Paper Scissors Store. Rock Paper Scissors has handmade glassware, pottery, jewelry, paper, ribbon, and toys. In the Clover is a local favorite with fragrances, jewelry, clothing, books, and skin care products.
