PEMAQUID POINT LIGHTHOUSE
The 21-mile voyage to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is a spectacular meld of colorful forests, Atlantic ocean vistas, and charming countryside. The light itself is widely considered one of the most striking lighthouses in the country. Built in 1827, the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse stands 79 feet tall. The property has incredibly unique molten rock formations on the shores of Lighthouse Cove. The ancient rocks have become one of the main draws of this historic site. Both the western and eastern sides of the property feature beautiful foliage near the ocean’s edge.
COASTAL MAINE BOTANICAL GARDENS
The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens thankfully stay open through October for our enjoyment. While many of the summer bloomers wilt away in the fall, the botanical gardens still have beautiful annuals, geraniums, hydrangeas, aconitums, roses, berries, and some of Boothbay’s best fall foliage on the surrounding trees and shrubs. The horticulture staff decorates the property with pumpkins, gourds, hay, and corn stalks.
FORT EDGECOMB STATE HISTORIC SITE
The Fort Edgecomb State Historic Site is a half-mile walk from beautiful Sheepscot Harbour Village Resort and Water’s Edge. Constructed in 1809, Fort Edgecomb once guarded the port of nearby Wiscasset, the former home to one of the largest shipbuilding hubs in New England. The octagon-shaped fort still stands firm today, and the Sheepscot River views are spectacular, especially in autumn. Though not guaranteed, tourists are often allowed to go inside the fort to the second level. The empty second level has massive wooden beams and breathtaking valley vistas – from this vantage point, you can see Westport Island, Birch Point, and North Edgecomb.
LOBSTER COVE / APPALACHEE PRESERVES
Experienced hikers make their way to the Lobster Cove Preserve in Boothbay Harbor every autumn. The out and in trail starts at the tranquil Lobster Cove Meadow, a natural, overgrown Maine jungle, and swings past Appalachie Pond. The 3.5-mile hike has grassy meadows, ocean lookouts, pond walks, bogs, and creeks. These hiking trails cut between tall, century-old pines while sporadically offering stunning foliage.
REID STATE PARK
The 24-mile drive from Wiscasset to Reid State Park is a gorgeously colorful ride. Even in the fall, their many beaches are worth visiting. Mile Beach is the ideal location for a fall picnic as it looks out onto the vast Atlantic Ocean. Todd’s Point and Griffith Head jut out from the coast, offering magnificent ocean and forest views. While Reid State Park doesn’t have eye-popping fall foliage, it’s a beautiful detour on a memorable autumn car ride.
