A LOOK AT EDGECOMB, ME | WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT ITS PAST AND PRESENT

Today, the Boothbay Harbor region is known as one of the go-to vacation destinations in Midcoast Maine. With such a wide variety of things to do and see, it’s not hard to see why. However, this region has a rich past that helped shape it into what it is today. On your next visit to Sheepscot Harbour Village Resort, spend some time learning about the history of Edgecomb, ME. You never know what bits of trivia knowledge you’ll pick up.

A GLIMPSE AT THE TOWN’S HISTORY

Edgecomb, which was incorporated as a township in 1774, got its start with early settlers creating multipurpose households and starting small home-based businesses. During the 19th century, many of the men in town started becoming involved in the maritime trade as ship captains, sailors, and merchants.

Today, there are several ways to explore the town’s past, including finding historical buildings. There are still some structures from the early settlement days scattered around town. You can also visit the Congregational Church, was has been around since the late 1700s.

The most well-known part of Edgecomb’s early days is Fort Edgecomb State Historic Site. Work on the blockhouse here was finished in 1809. The structure saw minimal action. In fact, the only time its cannons were fired was to celebrate James Madison becoming president. It was added to the list of the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and the boundaries were expanded in 1991 to create a historic district.

EXPERIENCE MODERN DAY EDGECOMB
